Understanding Medicare Enrollment Periods: What You Need to Know Before You Turn 65

Written by Kershaw Retirement Solutions | September 22, 2026

Turning 65 is an exciting milestone, but it also comes with important decisions about your healthcare coverage. Medicare offers valuable benefits, but knowing when and how to enroll is just as important as choosing the right coverage.

Missing an enrollment deadline can lead to late enrollment penalties, coverage gaps, or fewer plan options. That's why taking the time to understand Medicare's enrollment periods can make a big difference.

Know Your Medicare Enrollment Windows

Most people first become eligible for Medicare around their 65th birthday through their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), but that's only one of several enrollment opportunities. Depending on your situation, you may also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you're still working and have employer coverage, or you may need to make changes during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7).

It's also important to understand that enrolling in Medicare isn't the only decision you'll make. You'll need to consider whether Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan better fits your healthcare needs, and whether additional coverage, such as prescription drug coverage or a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, may be appropriate for your situation.

Every person's circumstances are different, which is why understanding your options before your enrollment window opens can help you avoid unnecessary stress later.

Don't Miss Important Deadlines

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming they'll be automatically enrolled or believing they can sign up whenever they choose. While some individuals are automatically enrolled through Social Security, many are responsible for enrolling themselves.

Delaying enrollment without qualifying for a Special Enrollment Period can result in permanent late enrollment penalties for Medicare Part B and Part D, along with potential gaps in coverage.

Planning ahead helps ensure your coverage begins when you need it and allows you to compare your options with confidence.
